Importance of Editing
by
Lana Jordan
Editing is one of the most fundamental aspects of producing a book. Every writer can benefit from it. Whether you're planning to self-publish or send your manuscript to traditional publishers, you should seriously consider having it professionally edited first.
I recently completed a children's picture book manuscript. Even though I am an editor myself, I decided to pay another professional editor to go over the manuscript.
I knew the spelling and grammar were right, but I wanted developmental feedback from someone else's perspective. I wanted to ensure that my manuscript was as polished as possible. I went through two rounds of revisions with the editor. Her suggestions required a lot more thought and work on my part. After that, I felt confident the story was ready to begin the publishing process.
Traditional publishers have in-house editors who prepare manuscripts for publication. When you self-publish, you are the publisher, and it's your responsibility to provide the best possible product to your customers. Remember, you're going to be asking people to spend their hard-earned money on your book. Even if spelling and grammatical errors don't bother you personally, they probably will bother your readers, reviewers, and vendors.
A poorly edited book will reflect poorly on you. A well-edited book will reflect well on you and will boost your credibility as an author.
Whether you have written a novel or nonfiction, a children's picture book or a cookbook, Jorlan Publishing can ensure that your book is free from errors of grammar, punctuation, and syntax while maintaining your unique voice and style. Those who read your book will not be distracted by confusing structure, inconsistencies, or mistakes. Present your book with pride and confidence to readers, booksellers, and publishers, knowing it is clear and error-free.

manuscript may be excellent, but the writing may need
considerable revision. In a developmental edit, the
editor moves paragraphs
within a chapter or section to improve the flow;
restructures content with headings; identifies gaps in
content and either writes the required text or explains
the options so the author can do revisions; deletes
extraneous content; revises dialogue in a work of fiction;
and rewrites in consultation with the author as necessary.
Developmental editing may be needed for fiction,
nonfiction, and children's literature.
